The Waiting

I arrived a bit early for Easter Vigil services at Grace Cathedral this year. Like most places hosting this solemn evening service, the interior of the Gothic cathedral was dimmed of all but the most necessary light. Unlike most places, however, Grace Cathedral is a massive building, and while the effect of this soaring, voluminous space bathed in darkness makes a person feel, frankly, very small, it also evoked powerful moments of quiet reflection. The waiting was long moments peering up, almost instinctively, into the dark void, the gothic ribs of the silent cathedral barely visible. The imposed and uncomfortable silence was pierced only by the sudden presence of fire, which ends the darkness, and begins a story about the birth of Light.
